      Changing hand-in/hand-out days/times

        Article Summary

Here we describe how to change the homework hand-in and hand-out details for one class at a time but it is also possible to change these in bulk from the Class Manager page by selecting the classes you want to edit and clicking Edit selected classes.

        Changing hand-in and hand-out days

        Notes:
        1. Changing the hand-in or hand-out day will revert the next homework to full length if it was changed to half length
        2. Homework can be a maximum length of 7 days: if you choose Tues to Wed, for example, this will create a 1-day homework and not an 8-day one.
If you change the hand-out day there is a chance your students could end up with no homework for a time. It is only possible to set 1 homework in a Monday to Sunday period.
        1. Go to More > Class Manager
        2. Click the blue pencil icon next to the name of the class you want to edit.
        3. Scroll to the Homework Details at the bottom of the page and choose a new Hand-out day or Hand-in day
        4. Click Save for your changes to take effect

        Changing hand-in and hand-out times

Homework can take between 5-15 minutes to generate so may not appear immediately for students at the hand-out time.

It is not possible to change the homework hand-in date/time for a homework that has already gone out. Any changes made will only affect future homeworks.
        1. Go to More> Class Manager.
        2. Click the blue pencil icon next to the name of the class you want to edit.
        3. Scroll to the Homework Details at the bottom of the page and choose a new Hand-out time or Hand-in time.
        4. Click Save for your changes to take effect

Choosing the best hand-in and hand-out days

Schools already using Sparx Maths have found the following useful when deciding what days to choose:
        • Avoid hand-in on a Monday: doing so leaves less opportunity for reminding students to complete it.
        • Have hand-in day on the same day as a timetabled lesson: students who have completed their homework can be praised and students who have not completed their homework can be reminded to do so.
        • Have the same hand-out and hand-in days across the school: or at least the year group, so that reminders and posters are consistent from teachers and form tutors for all classes.
        • Have a weekend between hand-out and hand-in days: this gives students more time to complete their work.
        • Choose different days of the week for hand-out and hand-in days: this allows teachers to check books and avoid confusion over which homework assignment the student needs to do if they have been given an extension or detention.
Note: while we don’t recommend choosing the same day for hand-out and hand-in, we have had schools operate this policy successfully.
