What is a diagnostic first homework and how does it differ from a normal homework?

In the absence of information about a student’s ability, Sparx will set their first homework to be a diagnostic homework. This homework allows Sparx to better understand the prior attainment of a student so that we can set future homeworks appropriately; in a diagnostic homework, students receive a tailored set of questions that change in difficulty throughout the homework.

To a student, a diagnostic homework will appear no different to any other first homework. They will get a similar number of questions to their peers, take a similar amount of time, and still be checked for good bookwork.

Note: Students who receive a diagnostic first homework won’t see topics set in the planner that week, but these topics will be revisited in subsequent weeks to ensure students won’t have missed out.
