How is the ability of a student determined?

In order to determine the ability of a student, we combine the answers each student gives in Sparx with the difficulties of the questions we are asking to inform a statistical model. As students answer more questions we will reassess their ability after each homework has been completed, to ensure we are giving them attainable, yet sufficiently challenging material. As a result of this approach, it is important that all work completed in Sparx is the student’s own.

For students who are new to Sparx, we will use the class attainment level to set their homework difficulty if there is one selected. However, after students have completed a few Sparx homework assignments, we will set homework based on their performance and no longer use the class attainment level.
