Getting students and classes ready for a new academic year in a non-MIS school

At the beginning of every academic year, there are some things you’ll need to do in order to get your classes and students ready for the new academic year.

When we move your school from one year to the next in Sparx Maths (something that we call ‘academic year rollover’), the following things will happen automatically:

  • All of last year’s classes will no longer be visible in Teacher Portal
  • As there won’t be any classes, all of your students will be placed into the No Class group in Student Manager - but don’t worry, all of their data and their login details will remain the same
  • Because your students won’t belong to a class, they won’t be able to log in to Sparx Maths until you’ve added them to their new class

    To get your classes and students ready you will now need to do the following:

    1. Remove any students who have left the school, from Sparx Maths

    2. Create classes for the new academic year

    3. Move existing students into their new classes

    4. Import any new students that have joined the school

    1. Removing students who have left the school from Sparx Maths

    As you are responsible for ensuring that your school’s data is accurate and up to date, we recommend that you do this step as soon as possible.



    1. Go to Student Manager under the More menu in Teacher Portal
    2. Choose No class from the More classes menu at the top of the screen
    3. Tick any students that have left the school, and who you want to remove from Sparx Maths
    4. Click the Remove student(s) button
    5. You will now be asked to confirm that you want to remove these students

    2. Create classes for the new academic year

    3. Move existing students into their new classes

    • Go to Student Manager under the More menu in Teacher Portal
    • Choose No class from the More classes menu at the top of the screen


    We recommend that you move students one class at a time. For each class:

    • Tick all of the students in the class
    • Click the Move selected students button, then click To a class
    • Choose the class that you want to move the students to, then click Move students
    • Repeat this for each class.

    These students are now in classes and will be able to log in to Sparx Maths again using their existing usernames and passwords.

    Please note that they won’t see last year’s homework. They’ll need to wait until their first homework of the new year is generated, or they can start using independent learning straight away. 

    4. Import new students

    Please do not delete existing students from your site and reimport them as this will result in them losing all of their data including our knowledge of their ability level and the XP they have collected up to that point.
