What information is sent to parents/carers?

        Article summary

We've found that student homework completion rates for schools that have parental emails turned on are significantly higher than those that do not. If you have chosen to turn parent emails on for your school then they will receive the following communications from Sparx.

If you want to check who we will send emails to for a student, look at the Student Manager page.
If you want to add additional parent/carer email addresses, see our Adding parent/carer emails article for more information

        Password reset emails

        • Parents and carers receive this email when a teacher has reset a student's password.
        • The email contains the student's username and a link to where the student can finish resetting their password and log in.

        Parent/carer welcome emails

        • Parents and carers receive two Welcome emails, one immediately after the first handout for the student, and then the second two days later.
        • The first email explains what Sparx Maths is, how it works, and aims to reassure the parent/carer that they have nothing to do.
        • The second email highlights how Sparx Maths has all the tools available for students to be self-sufficient to complete their homework and how they can track their progress.

        The weekly update email

Parents/carers will get one weekly update email if their child has been set Compulsory homework that week. They will not receive emails if the homework is either turned off (for example during holidays) or set to Optional Only.

Example weekly update email for a student who has completed their homework

The weekly update emails have 2 main sections:

        Current homework

Shows the student's current progress with their homework that week and suggests an action for the parent to encourage their child. Depending on their progress the message will say one of these three things:

        • [StudentName] hasn't started this week's homework
        • [StudentName] has completed xx% of this week's homework
        • [Great! StudentName] has finished this week's homework which is due [date]

        Previous homework

Shows the student's progress with previous homeworks, including whether or not they were completed late. Clicking the link will take the parent to Parent Portal page showing more detail on the homework completion data. Parents will see the same previous homeworks that students can see.

Parents can view this information in more detail by clicking the link to the Parent Portal

If your student is using multiple Sparx systems (e.g. Sparx Reader) then the link will take you to a dashboard where you can choose to view homework completion information for each system.

Within the Parent Portal, there is also a useful FAQs section.

Please note that each email contains a unique link to Parent Portal and this link will expire 7 days after the email is sent.

When do the weekly update emails get sent?

        Where homework is due:

        • More than 3 days after hand-out: emails will be sent three days before hand-in
        • Less than 3 days after hand-out: emails will be sent the day after the homework is set.
        • The day after it is set: emails will be sent the same day as hand-out.

Example 1: If a school has homework hand-out on Monday and hand-in the following Monday, then the parent emails will be sent on Friday.

Example 2: If a school has homework hand-out on Monday and hand-in on Wednesday, then the parent emails will be sent on Tuesday.

Note: parent emails could be sent on any day of the week, including weekends

What time are update emails sent?

On a weekday: Sparx starts to send emails at 3:30pm, and most parents will receive the update email by early evening.

At the weekend: Sparx starts to send emails at 9am, and most parents will receive the update email by early afternoon.

Parents/carers can choose to stop receiving emails from Sparx

We feel that parental engagement is really important, however, if a parent or carer does not want to receive these messages, then they can use the link Update your email preferences at the bottom of the email to manage their subscription.

If you have a parent or carer who has previously unsubscribed but wants to start receiving emails again, then please contact us and we will restart these emails for them.
