Using Sparx Maths with Year 11s

        Article summary

We often get asked for advice on using Sparx Maths with Year 11 cohorts so here we collate some of our key tips.

        Keep setting regular weekly homework

It can be tempting to carry out a different approach with your Year 11s but our research shows that doing 1 hour of personalised, challenging homework each week can improve progress so we highly recommend keeping homework turned on for your Year 11 students

        Consider extending the homework length

If you want to include more than the recommended 3-4 topics for an hour of homework then change the Compulsory homework length to 90 minutes and add 5-6 topics to the homework. Find out how in this article: Changing a class’s homework length

        Use the Planner regularly

Because what you are teaching in class is more likely to be fluid all teachers should keep a close eye on their Planned homework emails and make changes as needed each week to ensure students are getting set the topics they are working on in lessons. Find out more about how to edit homework in our article: Adding, rescheduling or removing topics in an upcoming homework

Use Target and XP Boost homework

Target and XP Boost homework is personalised and therefore contains additional practice on the topics we know students need to work on. Many schools using Sparx Maths make it a requirement that their Year 10s and 11s must complete these homework types too. Find out more about these homework types in our article What types of homework do students have access to?

Use QLAs and Independent Learning for extra targeted practice

You are likely to be already doing past papers so make use of our Sparx Maths Question Level Analysis (QLAs) to help identify topics that students need to work on and use these either in lessons if there is a large proportion of students who need support, or direct students to individual topics in Independent Learning. You may find our Sparx Topic Lists useful for directing students to specific topics.

Instil some healthy competition between classes and students

Because homework completion and total XP earned are not linked to attainment it's possible to use these data points to create fair competition between classes and students. You can find data to support this on the following pages:
