Managing homework for a class of mixed-tier students

        Article summary

A class may contain a mixture of Foundation and Higher tier students. Here we list ideas for how to manage the contents of homework to ensure students see content most suitable for their entry tier.

Student's homework levels can be overridden

You could override your students' homework level to align with their entry tier.

        • GCSE Levels 1 and 2 are designed for students taking the Foundation tier.
        • GCSE Level 3 is designed for students on the borderline between Foundation and Higher-tier papers. You can set students to this level to ensure they see content suitable for both papers.
        • GCSE Levels 4 and 5 are designed for students taking the Higher tier.

The class can be split within your MIS

You could set up another class within your MIS to accommodate these students with each class following a different scheme of learning.

This means you would have to manage two lots of homework, but will allow you to set students different content depending on their tier of entry.

Higher-tier students can be directed to Independent Learning

If you would prefer to keep all students on one scheme of learning, you could omit higher-only content from the scheme of learning, and direct those students accessing the higher paper to Independent Learning to do as additional tasks.

Higher-only topics can be excluded from Foundation-tier students' homework

If you keep the class on a scheme of learning that covers both foundation and higher topics, there is a setting in Sparx which will ensure foundation students will never be given higher-only topics.

This means if a 'higher-only' topic was put into the homework for the class, we would ignore it when creating homework for those foundation students but include it for the rest of the class.
