Integrating with Wonde to connect Sparx Maths to your MIS

Integrating with Wonde to connect Sparx Maths to your MIS

        Article Summary

Wonde is a service used to talk to your school's Management Information System ( MIS )

Wonde is used by over 17,000 schools in the UK to securely share their data with suppliers like Sparx Learning. It's been designed with data privacy in mind, meaning that it's fully GDPR compliant and ensures that you only share the data with us that you want to.

Wonde supports the use of Sparx Maths in your school

Using Wonde, we obtain data about your maths classes, your students, and their parents, from your MIS. We use this data to:

        • Set up your classes in Sparx Maths and keep them in sync with your school's MIS
        • Automatically create Sparx Maths accounts for your students
        • Send parent emails

Wonde controls your classes in Sparx Maths

When you start using Sparx Maths and at the beginning of each academic year thereafter, you'll need to import your maths classes from your school's MIS:

The classes that you can import, the name of each class, and class memberships (the students that belong to each class) are all controlled by your school's MIS. You won't be able to change these things manually in Sparx Maths.

If you make any changes to imported classes in your MIS (for example, changing the name of the class or changing class memberships), we'll automatically sync these with Sparx Maths.

If you remove a class from the list of imported classes, you'll no longer be able to see that class in your Sparx Maths site and students in that class will no longer be able to use Sparx Maths (unless they belong to another imported class).

Wonde also controls your students in Sparx Maths

We will automatically import any student that is a member of a class that's been imported from your school's MIS. They'll be placed into the relevant class in Sparx Maths and we'll create a Sparx Maths account for them.

Where available in your school's MIS, we will also store details of the primary parental contact's email address against each student, and we'll send them weekly parent emails to update them on their child's progress in Sparx Maths. They'll be presented with an option to unsubscribe from these emails if they don't want to receive them.

If you make any changes to imported students in your MIS (for example, changing the student's name or moving them to a different class), we'll automatically sync these with Sparx Maths.

If a student is removed from Sparx Maths following MIS changes, they will no longer appear in your Sparx Maths site, and the student will no longer be able to use Sparx Maths.

        Student usernames don't update automatically
If a student's name changes, we don't automatically update their username, as this could lead to a situation where the student can't log in if they don't know their new username.

If you want to change a student's username to reflect any name change, you can do that manually as described in this article:
        Changing a student's username

Wonde updates data in Sparx Maths every night

Wonde extracts the latest data from your school's MIS every few hours. Sparx Maths will in turn retrieve this data from Wonde overnight, every night (7 days a week). This means that any changes made to classes and students in your MIS should be reflected in Sparx Maths within 24 hours.

        Wonde costs you nothing

There is no cost for the school to use Wonde, however on rare occasions, your MIS provider may charge you so please do check with them.

        Optional Wonde data sharing permissions

When you process a Wonde authorisation request, you’ll notice that some of the permissions that we request are required and some are optional.

The information below describes how the optional permissions are used by Sparx Maths, and the benefits that sharing this data can bring. Please ensure that during the Wonde authorisation process, the permissions selected are in accordance with the school’s intentions. The selected permissions can be amended at any time, but please bear in mind that removing our access to data may limit some product features.

        Parent email addresses

Sparx Maths allows schools to connect with parents via a weekly email. By sharing the email addresses of parents, the school can send homework update emails to parents. These emails help to encourage homework completion and engagement between parents and students around their maths homework.

In order for us to be able to send these emails, you'll need to grant access to the 'contacts' set of permissions. Whilst we can access all the data under these permissions, we'll only process those contacts that are flagged as having parental responsibility for the student, and only those contacts will receive emails. Parents can unsubscribe from the emails at any time. More specific information on what we send and when can be found here: What information is sent to parents/carers?

Free School Meals, Pupil Premium, and English as an Additional Language

Free School Meals, Pupil Premium, and English as an Additional Language status is anonymised and used to research and validate the impact of Sparx Maths for all students (no matter what their status). The presence of these fields (ie. Y/N) is shared with Sparx Maths. No further detail is shared.

The non-anonymised data can also be included in in-product homework completion reports, allowing teachers to aggregate and analyse students' homework completion and rewards data by these attributes.

In order for us to be able to include this data in homework completion reports and to support Sparx Maths research, you'll need to grant access to the 'student demographic' and 'student cultural' sets of permissions.

Does this connection allow my MIS to integrate with 3rd party student and parent apps such as Class Charts or Bromcom.

Sparx Maths cannot currently integrate with 3rd party apps.
