Excluding higher only topics from a student's homework

        Article summary

A classes homework plan will sometimes contain topics with the label of "Higher only" on them. This means the content in these topics is suitable for students who will be sitting the higher tier of KS4 assessments.

There are occasions where you will have a class that contains students who are sitting a mixed tier of assessments (some foundation, and some higher), and therefore find it appropriate to exclude these higher only topics from going into the homework for students sitting the foundation assessments.

To exclude higher only topics from going into a student's homework:

        1. Go to Student Manager for the student’s class
        2. Click on the blue pencil icon next to the student
        3. In the Homework details section, you will see a dropdown called "Exclude higher only topics". Change this to be Yes
        4. Click save at the bottom of the screen

Please note that some of our topics that don't have the 'Higher only' tag may still contain questions that cover higher content within the level 4 and 5 brackets. Students would only see these questions if we feel that they will be able to answer them based on their prior learning.
If you want to completely block any of these higher questions from students then you will need to override their Sparx level down to a 3. See our article Changing a student’s homework level for how to do this. Doing this could prevent opportunities for stretching these students where they have shown a confident understanding of a topic.
