Changing a student’s homework to Optional only

Changing a student’s homework to Optional only

        Article summary

If a student is experiencing difficulties at home, is poorly, or has a special education need that means completing homework each week could be difficult or stressful for them, you might want to make their homework optional for a while. Making this change removes their compulsory homework but still gives them access to all their optional homeworks - XP Boost, Target, and Independent Learning.

An individual student's homework can be made optional on Student Manager

If you want to permanently change the type of homework a student receives:

        1. Go to Student Manager under Management on the left of the screen

        2. Choose the student's class or year from the options on the top left of the screen

        3. Edit a specific student by clicking the pencil icon next to their name

        4. Under Homework Details, choose Optional only

        5. Click Save on the bottom right

It is also possible to edit students' homework in bulk:

        1. Go to Student Manager

        2. Tick all the students whose homework type you want to change

        3. Click Edit selected students and make the change

This is how a homework will appear to students once it’s been set to Optional Only:

        Please note that:

        • Any changes here will take precedence over the homework type for the class

        • This change will affect all future homeworks for that student until you change their Homework type back to Compulsory

        • If you want to make the change for the whole class have a look at our article Changing a class’s homework to Optional only

Changing a student's homework type to Optional only will change the length of their XP Boost homework

If you change a student's homework to Optional only:

        • No new homeworks will show under their Compulsory homework section

        • The length of their personalised XP boost homework will change to match the homework length the class is set to. For example, if you set the recommended 60-minute compulsory homework, the student's XP Boost homework will increase from 30 to 60 minutes

        • Any topics that were in Planner will be set in the XP boost section of the homework

        • Their personalised Target homework will not be changed, and they'll still have access to the full content library in Independent Learning

        Finally:

        • Parents will not receive emails if their child's homework is set to Optional only

        • Optional only homework will not be counted in your school's homework hand-in stats
