Can I set homework fortnightly?
Sparx was built around schools setting weekly homework and embedding good habits through regular practice. It is possible to set homework fortnightly but it's not how Sparx was designed and so would mean additional manual work, as described below.
Before you do this please consider the following:
Each homework is personalised when we generate it so once a student has opened it then the question levels and topics will be set. If a student does, for example, a longer homework every fortnight, we won't have the opportunity to learn how they are doing and to further personalise their questions until the next homework is opened. However, if students do a weekly homework of say forty-five minutes then we can learn from the extra data we get from the first forty-five minutes to make their next forty-five minute homework even better.
To set fortnightly homework (a 2-week long homework)
- Build your scheme of learning with topics every other week
- Add in a No homework week every other week
This would mean the homework leaps over the holiday week and you get a 2-week long homework
To set homework every other week (a 1-week long homework)
- Build your scheme of learning with topics every other week
- Leave the weeks in between with no topics (consolidation only)
- Go to the Planner of each class and manually turn each consolidation week to a No homework week
This will not make HW leap over the No HW week and keep a 7-day homework
And finally:
- Please do not forget to have No HW weeks in the relevant weeks in the SoL for the holidays.
- Maintaining consistency for homework being set and completed each week is also important as students can be more likely to get confused about which week they are on which could lead to a drop off in completion. The momentum for high completion rates is much more successful with a weekly routine.
